Dr. Yun-Ping Zhou assumed the position of Director, Scientific Affairs for China since August 1, 2011. In this position, within the Office of CMO and GCSA, Yun-Ping will focus his efforts on developing and executing Merck’s strategy for scientific leadership in China and helping to establish Merck as a scientific partner of preference in the region.

Dr. Zhou joined Merck Research Laboratories (MRL) in August 2003 as a Research Fellow in the department of Metabolic Disorders. During his tenure in MRL, Dr. Zhou assumed roles of increasing responsibilities, having served as a biology lead of several early stage Diabetes drug discovery programs. Most recently, he was a Senior Research Fellow and Islet Biology Lead in the Department of Metabolic Disorders at MRL.

Yun-Ping was graduated from the Fourth Military Medical University in Xian, China. He completed his residency at the Air Force General Hospital in Beijing in 1985, and served as the attending physician and instructor at the Department of Endocrinology in Shanghai Changhai Hospital, Shanghai from 1989 to 1992. He then started his research career at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and obtained a Ph.D. degree in 1996. His theses work pioneered the concept of beta-cell lipotoxicity, which remains an active field of research. Prior to joining Merck, Yun-Ping was a scientist at Metabolex in California and a Research Assistant Professor in the department of Medicine at the University of Chicago.
