Each laboratory analyte has a set of normal ranges. Sometimes the result is so far outside the normal range to represent a potentially life threatening value ofr the patient. These results are referred to as "Panic values". The technician receiving this type of panic value is legally required to notify the practitioner that ordered the test. The laboratory is required to maintain a "Panic Log" that includes the analyte (the individual test), the result, the initials of the technician, the name of the practitioner who was notified and the date:time of the notification.
